No MRSA cases for 15 months in Shropshire

Shropshire has gone almost 15 months without any cases of the superbug MRSA.

The Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal Hospitals have not had any reported cases of the bacterium since October 24, 2010.

Hospital officials said they were delighted the trust had gone so long without a case.

The figures came as the Government unveiled targets to build on the progress made on tackling infections last year. The NHS is being asked to reduce the numbers of infections in 2012/13 of MRSA by a further 29 per cent.

Latest monthly statistics show, for the first time since mandatory surveillance began in 2001, MRSA bloodstream infections have been kept at under 100 reported cases per month for the last six months.
