£5,000 grant for Whittington Castle revamp
Monday 16th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Ambitious plans to revamp the grounds of a castle near Oswestry have been kick-started with an offer of £5,000 grant funding.
Members of Whittington Castle Preservation Trust want to spruce up the area. They aim to encourage more people to visit.
Last week they met up with representatives from English Heritage to discuss possible funding and walked away with a promise of cash to help them start work.
Discussions have already taken place with a garden designer to create a vision for the project which could take more than five years to complete.
Plans include creating a new all-weather pathway, planters and an additional bridge to create a circular walk.
Work is now needed to help clear the land and manage the trees.
Today’s offer of funding will be put towards equipment to help carry out fence repairs and scrub clearance.
Andy Cawthray, from the trust, said: “We had a meeting with the representative of English Heritage looking to secure initial funding for tree felling and fencing part of the project.
“Depending on quotes for the work the initial value is about £5,000.
“English Heritage has gone away and given a promise to turn it around quickly for us.
“That should hopefully provide money for the majority of the tree work along the boundaries.”
The trust hopes to start up working parties in the near future and Mr Cawthray said work needed to be completed in the next four to six weeks before the bird nesting season starts.
He is calling for volunteers to do the work.
A spokesman for English Heritage said: “We are pleased to be helping local people look after the castle which is of historic importance both locally and nationally.”
