A family who lost everything in a house fire in Telford said they have been overwhelmed with the response from the public as donations of toys and clothing flood in.

And they said that once they are settled in a new home, anything they do not need will be given to a charity shop to help the community.

Rebecca Coffey, her partner Ian McCallum, and their children, Charlie, four, Chloe, six, and seven-week-old Finley all escaped the fire at their home in Teal Close, Brookside.

Rebecca dropped her three children out of the bedroom window to escape, suffering a broken leg when she jumped herself.

Baby Finley fractured a bone in his skull in the fall. All are now out of hospital and recovering well.

Rebecca said the family wanted to thank everyone for their help. “It has been great, everyone has been so supportive,” she said.

Chloe and Charlie go to Holmer Lake Primary School, in Brookside, which is fundraising too.

A school spokesman said: “We are having a ‘wear bright clothes day’ today (Friday) which is like a traditional mufti day, to raise money for the family.

“Parents of our pupils are also inundating us with toys and clothes and other items to pass on.

“As a school we often support other charities; this time we want to help those closer to home,” he added.

Staff at Pizza Hut, in Telford Bridge Retail Park, were also touched by the family’s plight and started a collection jar.

The Red Lion, in Madeley, where Ian and his father Malcolm McCallum play darts, is also planning fundraising events.

And Khatija Dor, 38, who lives in the Aston area of Birmingham, also gathering donations.
