Shrewsbury car park will open despite safety concern

A new 83-space public car park will be opened in Shrewsbury town centre – despite fears pedestrian safety will be put at risk.

The temporary car park will be on land at Horsefair in Abbey Foregate.

It was given the go-ahead by Shropshire Council’s central planning committee yesterday.

The application for the five-year car park by Morris Property was deferred in November after concerns were raised over the site access amid claims it would put pedestrians in danger.

Developers, subsequently, altered the plans so that half of the site, with provision for 42 parking spaces, is accessed from the Abbeylawns office development and the other half accessed off Horsefair.

The other half, separated by a fence, will consist of 41 spaces and both will be open six days a week from 7am to 7pm.

Councillor Miles Kenny, said: “There isn’t a proven need for this car park and there is significantly high footfall in this area, which we want to encourage, and this development could conflict that and danger pedestrians.”

Resident Peter Wright said: “It will create an unacceptable impact on an important conservation area.”

But Councillor Malcolm Price said: “What we have is a reasonable compromise as all in all they have listened to people’s concerns and made changes.”
