Horse riders urged to saddle up safely
Friday 13th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
A campaign to cut down on the number of horse riding injuries has been launched by a specialist hospital in Shropshire.
Bosses of the Orthopaedic Hospital near Oswestry say they are seeing too many patients with neck and back injuries, caused when they are thrown or fall from a horse. The hospital has been backed by international showjumper, Tim Stockdale and the British Showjumping Association.
Mr Stockdale spent six weeks in the hospital’s spinal unit last year after a riding accident.
Mr Aheed Osman, clinical director of the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries, said there were currently two patients in the centre with horse riding injuries.
“We are urging horse riders to take great care if trying young horses and to only ride horses that are within their capability,” he said.
Olympian Mr Stockdale said anything the hospital could do to get the safety message across to horse riders must be applauded.
He said: “I have been incredibly lucky. Not only does my injury appear to be mending, but I was fortunate enough to find myself in this wonderful centre.”
The British Showjumping Association is backing the hospital in recognition of the support, care and treatment that Mr Stockdale received by setting up a Just Giving online donation page.
Iain Graham, chief executive for the association, said: “The tremendous results the hospital has achieved across sporting related incidents, many of which have been riding related, has been phenomenal resulting in them being one of the leading spinal injuries centres in the country.
“We would also like to thank everyone concerned at the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries for getting Tim back on his feet.”
