A fossil belonging to one of the fiercest predators ever known – a Tyrannosaurus Rex – is to go on show in Shropshire.

A tooth measuring about an inch-and-a-half, which was originally found in Dakota in the USA, is being looked after by amateur palaeontologist Pauline Atkinson, who lives in Whitton, near Ludlow.

It is due to be sold at a sale in London in the next few weeks.

But before it is sent to the capital, it will go on show at an antiques fair at Ludlow College on January 28.

Mrs Atkinson, 52, who runs Fossil Earth antiques trading company, said it was the first time she had ever come into possession of a genuine T-Rex tooth and said she was excited to be able to display it to the public in Ludlow.

The tooth was found in the same region as the remains of the biggest and most complete T-Rex skeleton, which was eventually sold to a museum in Chicago for 7.6 million dollars about 15 years ago.

Mrs Atkinson, who has studied fossils extensively for the past 10 years, said the biggest T-Rex tooth ever found was more than 12 inches long and eventually sold for more than 36,000 dollars.

She said: “I regularly sell fossils in Ludlow as I live in the area but never had a T-Rex tooth before. They are only found in the USA and Canada.

“The tooth is very dark and has serrations along each side – this T-Rex would have lived for tearing flesh and the tooth was designed just for that.

If you look at the size of a T-Rex jaw the teeth are all of different lengths and they were all D-shaped to make them stronger.

“I have lots of loyal customers in Ludlow and there are lots of children who often ask me if I have a T-Rex tooth – and this time I will be able to say yes.” Details or more information at www.fossilearth.co.uk
