Wedding ring scare for Martin with cardboard bank loss
Thursday 12th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
A recently-married man recycled more than he bargained for in Shrewsbury – after losing his wedding ring in a supermarket cardboard bank.
Martin Wright, 28, lost the £260 ring at the recycling bank at the Morrisons store in Shrewsbury on Sunday morning, but it was recovered the next day.
Mr Wright, who works at Shirehall and has been married to wife Donna, 31, for the past 18 months, said his heart sank when the ring slipped off his finger.
He said he tried to find a way to get inside the bank himself, but realised it would be impossible. He then attempted to call all of the numbers on the side of the bin, but got no response as it was a Sunday.
In his desperation Mr Wright, who lives in Belvidere, put out a message on Twitter asking for help – and was surprised when he got a swift response from waste firm Veolia.
“I sent out a message on Twitter and Veolia got in touch within 30 minutes.”
He than faced a nervous overnight wait to see if the ring could be discovered – and also had to tell his wife about the misadventure. “I think she realised how annoyed I was and calmed me down,” he said.
On Monday morning, Veolia employee Alan Hotchkiss and a colleague clambered inside the bin and eventually managed to find the ring inside a tea bag box.
Mark Hunter, operations manager for Veolia Environmental Services Shropshire, said: “The bin was due to be collected early on Monday morning but because of the tweet we managed to stop the bin being emptied.”
