Parliament tour for bucket list Ben
Thursday 12th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Shrewsbury’s Ben Hughes, who has been given just months to live, is hoping to rub shoulders with Prime Minister David Cameron when he travels down to London to visit Parliament.
Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury & Atcham, this week offered Ben and his wife Ayla the chance to visit the House of Commons after being touched by Ben’s tale. Mr Hughes, 28, accepted the invitation straight away and he will now go down to the capital with Mr Kawczynski this month or in February for a tour of the House and a lunchtime reception.
Mr Kawczynski said: “I felt I just wanted to make a fuss of him as I’ve been following his story closely and he’s such a courageous person.”
Mr Hughes said: “It came totally out of the blue but I’m really pleased that Ayla and I will get a chance to visit Parliament as I’ve never been before.
“I suppose it depends on what happens on the day but it would be nice if the opportunity to meet Prime Minister David Cameron did arise. It’s great that I’m getting to do things that I had never even thought of putting on the bucket list, but still want to experience.”
Mr Hughes, of Harlescott, was born with congenital heart disease but despite a heart and lung transplant in 2007, his lungs went into chronic rejection and he was told by doctors in November he only had six months to live.
He drew up a bucket list of things he wanted to achieve or experience before he passes away.
