Oswestry energy centre move to create 100 staff posts

Up to 100 jobs could be created in Oswestry if plans to establish a new renewable energy firm in the town go ahead, it was revealed today.

Bosses of the new company, called nRED, plan to set up an energy data centre in the town. They say that the scheme would put Oswestry at the forefront of the country’s efforts to tackle climate change.

The firm would monitor the efficiency of renewable energy systems, such as solar panels, owned by local authorities and businesses across the country.

The group of businesses behind the proposals is being led by Mike Harris, an Oswestry telecoms entrepreneur.

At full strength, up to 100 jobs would be created at the centre and recruitment could get under way in May.

Hollis House, on the Mile Oak Industrial Estate, will be the company’s base for data management operations and for education and training programmes.

“Proposals to develop the national centre in Oswestry arose from discussions with local farmers who were concerned to have every detail of the energy generated by their solar panels and of the associated carbon savings,” said Mr Harris.

Clive Jones, managing director of Energy Gain UK, and Mike Marchant, co-ordinator of the Rapid Technology Transfer Group, are also involved in the project.
