Claim Ludlow revamp will give £6m lift to economy
Thursday 12th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
The redevelopment of Ludlow’s historic Buttercross could pump almost £6 million into the local economy, it was claimed today.
Ludlow Town Council chiefs have submitted plans to Shropshire Council to install glass doors and a disabled elevator in the Grade I listed building.
Civic leaders say when the application is granted they will apply for £1.9 million of Heritage Lottery funding which would turn the Buttercross into an interpretation and education centre.
The cash would also be used to seal off the Buttercross to late-night trouble makers with sliding glass doors, help pay for major works to the town walls and reopen an ancient path around Ludlow Castle.
Veronica Calderbank, Ludlow Council clerk, said she believed the direct contribution to the local economy would be three times what was being invested.
She said: ““The investment would provide a quality additional tourist att- raction that is highly relevant to an area that derives a high percentage of its income from tourism.
“The benefits of this project would be to provide financial sustainability for the building, create a flagship visitor attraction, and provide a significant contribution to the local economy.
“There is only one contentious element to the project which is having to glaze the remainder of the market area on the ground floor of the Buttercross.”
