£3m Shrewsbury fire service HQ opens
Thursday 12th January 2012, 12:29PM GMT.
The new £3 million headquarters of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service was officially opened in Shrewsbury today.
Dignitaries, including the leaders of Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council, were on hand for the official opening, along with Fire Minister Bob Neill.
The overhauled facility in St Michael’s Street, which has been nearly six years in the making, has been modernised to help make the fire service more effective, as well as providing efficiency savings.

The previous headquarters was demolished and the adjoining fire station extended to accommodate the support staff.
Councillor Stuart West, chairman of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Authority, said that it was a great honour to have the minister open the new facility.
He said: “Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is committed to providing the community with the best possible service and our new fire station, workshops and HQ is a symbol of our ambition and desire for continual improvement.”
Mr Neill unveiled a plaque at the site in front of 40 invited guests and 30 staff members.
The cost of the work has been found from efficiency savings over the past five years, along with capital grant money from the Government. The full costs of the renovation are due to be paid off by April at no extra cost to local taxpayers.
The fire station and HQ have remained open while upgrade work took place.
