An appeal hearing, looking at arguments for and against whether another multi-million supermarket should be built in Oswestry, has begun today.

Firms JT Hughes and Guttercrest are appealing a decision by Shropshire Council to refuse a joint bid to build a food-only store on land off Victoria Road.

Members of the planning committee rejected the bid in 2010 and instead decided a store should be built on the Smithfield livestock site in Shrewsbury Road, with a cinema, restaurants and offices, as part of a £56 million redevelopment.

The hearing has started at Shropshire Council’s Castle View offices, with planning inspector Robin Brooks saying he had already visited the site.

He said: “There will be a structured discussion so I can collect the information I need for my decision.

“The hearing will be adjourned at some point to allow a site visit.”

The inspector will give a written decision in several weeks.

Shropshire Council says planners still believe Oswestry does not need a further supermarket on top of the Smithfield proposal.

Campaign group the Oswestry Coalition, which says there is no need for any new supermarkets, is also expected to speak.
