New Newport street lights to help reduce clutter
Wednesday 11th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
New wall-mounted street lights are to replace lampposts in parts of Newport next month as part of a bid to ‘de-clutter’ the town.
The new lights, mounted on buildings similar to those in Ironbridge, will replace many of the current lampposts in High Street. Mike Stacey, the chairman of the Newport Regeneration Partnership High Street sub committee, said it would help to make the town centre look smarter.
He said: “We are removing as many of the columns as we can.
“The idea is to de-clutter the area.
“We looked at the lights in Ironbridge and other areas for inspiration.
“We liked what we saw in Ironbridge, but they were a bit too big for Newport, so we have gone for a smaller version.”
Mr Stacey said that around two-thirds of lampposts on High Street would be replaced by wall mounted lights.
The new lights will be 8m from the ground, lower than the current 10m high lampposts.
And Mr Stacey said the new lights were also more efficient.
He added: “The other benefit is that they have the modern lenses which are much more efficient.
“In the long-run that will save quite a lot of money.”
The lights are the final piece in the jigsaw for the town’s council-led regeneration project.
But Mr Stacey said there were still a couple of loose ends to tie up.
He said: “Overall it’s been very successful and it’s a big benefit for the people of Newport.
“We’ve still got one or two problems. The money for the signage for the heritage trail has been cut so we are trying to sort that out, and there’s the work around the canal to complete.”
Telford & Wrekin Council spokesman Russell Griffin said the work was part of the Newport regeneration scheme and there had been a delay getting approval from owners of some of the buildings, mainly national organisations, but that the process was nearly done.
