The eyes definitely had it when this owl took a trip to market. The eagle owl came face to face with shoppers at Wellington market yesterday.

The trip was a far cry from its usual haunts across much of northern Europe, but the bird clearly found the whole day a hoot.

Andrew Campbell, who runs the Owl Experience and Rescue Centre in Gnosall, near Newport, brought his feathered friends to Wellington market to try to raise awareness of the work the centre does and raise funding for its work.

He said: “Unfortunately we missed out on a £4,000 Lottery grant recently so we really need to raise about £60 each month to help feed the birds. That amount will help to feed from 1,000 to 1,500 chicks every month.”

The centre opened last year after receiving a land donation from the Red Lion Farm in Haughton, allowing it to expand from caring for just three bird to take on 23 birds.

Mr Campbell will be running displays to help raise funds for the rescue centre in Wellington Market every Tuesday and Friday.
