Ellesmere landfill site wins extension
Wednesday 11th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Bosses of a landfill site near Ellesmere have won permission to continue using it for a further 20 years – despite objections from residents and councillors over noise and pollution.
Tudor Griffiths Limited had originally wanted to continue using its Spunhill site until 2035.
But at yesterday’s Shropshire Council north planning committee, members voted in favour of officers’ recommendations to extend its life until 2030.
Residents and councillors criticised original proposals after fearing another 25 years use would be too long.
But the company insist its plans will not have a negative effect on residents or the environment and will help protect 70 jobs.
At yesterday’s meeting, Councillor Joyce Barrow said: “Think about the economic benefits. We should support our local business.”
Erni Upton, of Colemere Residents’ Association, said there had been problems with noise and smells.

Burying our rubbish is not the answer to waste issues. This site is an eyesore. And in Shrewsbury, an incinerator has the go ahead. Why isn’t there an integrated plan for disposing of waste in Shropshire, once built can’t the stuff that would go to the Colemere site go to the incinerator instead?

on the same day that an incienrator is approved in shrewsbury, shropshire now has 170,000 tonnes per annum of waste disposal capacity plus about 500,000 tonnes per annum of capacity in the borough of telford and wrekin, yet it only produces 70,000 tonnes of residual waste each year?
Are we about to become the dirty man of UK, disposing of rubbish from cheshire, wales and wolverhampton?
