March opening hope at £2m Bridgnorth recycling centre
Tuesday 10th January 2012, 6:59PM GMT.
A controversial £2 million recycling centre in Bridgnorth could be open in March, the firm behind the facility said today.
Work is continuing on the former ITW Angleboard warehouse site in Faraday Drive to create the centre which will process more than 35,000 tonnes of rubbish a year.
Cat Slaytor, spokeswoman of Veolia Environmental Services which is behind the development, said: “We are still doing some building work. We are hoping to open it by the beginning to middle of March.
“We have done quite a bit of work to it. The majority of the work is inside the building but we have put a new weighbridge outside and we are building a road.”
The Barnsley Lane landfill site two miles out of the town will remain open until the new facility is unveiled.
Plans were submitted for a new household recycling centre because the Barnsley Lane site is approaching full capacity.
Planning permission was granted for the new centre despite a storm of protest from residents, which included holding public meetings over concerns such as noise, traffic, pests, odours and fly-tipping.
Hundreds of letters of objection were sent to Shropshire Council by residents and the Low Town Action Group but permission was granted.
After a residents’ liaison group was set up so Veolia could have meetings and address any concerns raised by members of the public.
Miss Slaytor said: “We have had three meetings now with them. They are ongoing. We have got another one due in early February. We have meetings on site.”
She said at one of the meetings they had been able to ease concerns about light pollution. The household recycling centre will deal with more than 30 types of items, including fridges.
