Telford & Wrekin Council’s plea on savings of £20m
Monday 9th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Residents in Telford are being urged to attend a public consultation on the council’s proposals to make almost £20 million in savings this year.
Telford & Wrekin Council is examining a number of options as it seeks to bridge a funding gap totalling about £40 million by 2014.
It has already sought the views of 3,000 residents and is now calling on others to attend a meeting on January 17 at 6pm at the Civic Offices in Telford centre.
The council plans to make almost £8.6 million cuts from services this year – saving a total of £17.6 million from services over the next three years. This is on top of a restructuring programme to reduce its staff costs by 20 per cent, saving a further £16.7 million.
The meeting is a chance to gather the views of residents on whether they would accept a government grant to freeze council tax or increase council tax next year to prevent even bigger rises or deeper service cuts the following years.
Councillor Bill McClements, council cabinet member for resources and service delivery, said: “Due to unprecedented cuts in government grant, we have some very difficult decisions to make and I urge as many people as possible to come along and give their views direct to budget decision makers.”
