Shropshire Council fees set to rise

The cost of weddings, taxi licences and going swimming are all set to rise under new moves proposed by Shropshire Council.

It wants to increase a range of charges, including sex shop licences, running market stalls and student bus fares, from April. But the authority has already announced a freeze in car parking fees in an effort to support the county’s towns.

Pest control fees, library fees, and charges for the music and arts service will also remain the same.

On Wednesday a list of revised fees will go before the council’s cabinet.

The proposals include raising the cost of sex shop licences by £500, from £2,025 to £2,531. The cost of a licence was just £1,350 in the 2010/11 financial year.

The amount paid by students over the age of 16 towards transport to and from college will also rise, from £262 to £330. The cost of an adult swim for non-members will go up to £4.90 from £4.55 and £3.90 from £3.80 for members.

Civil wedding fees will go up by £30 to £336.50 for ceremonies held during the week, to £396.50 for ceremonies held on Saturdays and £446.50 for ceremonies on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The cost of a private citizenship ceremony at Shirehall will rise from £135 to £150, and the cost of checking an adult’s nationality will increase by £5 to £60.

Fees for a civil funeral will go up from £145 to £150.

Hiring a council-owned room for a day will cost £100, up from £90, and for half a day the fee will rise from £48 to £55.

The cost of renting a market stall will rise 50p to £5.80 per square metre, and charities wanting to hire a hall will have to pay an extra £4 when the fee rises to £40.

Planning decision notices will go up to £16.70 per copy, up from £15.20 while land searches .

The cost of taxi licences is being reviewed because the council is trying to establish the full cost to make sure that it is not losing out when drivers apply or renew permits.

Those costs will be considered at a meeting of the Strategic Licensing Committee on January 17.

All these increases just days after the council announced it was wasting £1,000,000 on new traveller sites.
Something just does not seem right about this. I wonder what the ratepayers think.

Traveller sites are not a waste of money, sites made available no excuse for invading car parks etc forward thinking old chap .

Glad you think so. Perhaps you would like to have a site next door to you and all the filth and aggro that will come with it.
I have seen these sites abused in the past, toilet blocks stripped of anything of value, hence my comment, “wasting”.

If you say so , they do have to get planning permission before being built etc and s such if one is put by me it will be legally done, although i doubt it will ever happen ,it must not be down to opinions of some one who says i have seen this and that waffle.

Swimming already costs a small fortune, I thought the idea behind swimming pools was to enchourage people to exercise?

Little harsh on the market traders at shresbury market after only the first year of being on the up .
I can see a few of those packing up and moving on ,and the waiting list has probably gone down now already after this announcement, numpties.

    let me have my say

So much for promoting for people to start up small business within the market, if they put up the fees I see many traders will just pack it in. One market I go to shopping is just starting to see progress before christmas, but talking to them, things of died off now, diesel costs are hitting them and if this goes ahead, all I can say is seeing them say good bye market/s…
I rather have ten traders paying say £10 a week, than 5 paying say £20.
So shropshire Council wake up and start thinking.
