Oswestry trade fear as gas pipe works start
Monday 9th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Traders were today bracing themselves for a drop in takings after major gas works started on one of Oswestry’s busiest roads.
The vital mains gas replacement work by Wales and West Utilities is expected to close Willow Street for up to three weeks.
Work began today with traffic diverted from Church Street. It led to motorists queuing to get through traffic lights set up while the roadworks take place.
Oswestry Chamber of Commerce chairman Martin Anderson says the work, although essential, will ‘clearly be disruptive’ and the body has offered to act as a ‘communication channel’ to keep traders up to date with the progress of the project, which is due to last until the end of March.
He said: “The company have stated that they will try to minimise disruption and will do their best to keep all informed of any significant events.”
Ken Kapal, from KMK Wedding Rings & Fine Jewellery, said the roadworks will affect the whole town because Willow Street was one of its main thoroughfares.
He said his business would be open, adding: “It will kill any footfall. It will hurt my business.”
Dot Winchester, from Willow Gallery’s cafe, said: “We are still going to be open but we are worried.”
Shropshire Council’s roadworks bulletin said a temporary 20mph limit will be introduced in Cross Street while a one-way system will be set up on Festival Square.
A spokesman for the utility firm said a separate scheme was due to begin in College Road today.
