The River Severn was due to peak in Shrewsbury this afternoon, but levels will remain high for up to 48 hours, according to the Environment Agency.

A peak water level of between 3.2m and 3.4m is expected to occur at the Welsh Bridge before 2pm. Flood barriers remain in place at Frankwell car park, which is still closed to the public.

The West Midlands Showground remains flooded with nearby Gravel Hill Lane closed to the public. Sydney Avenue in Castlefields is also closed.

The Environment Agency said there would be no need for further flood barriers in Shrewsbury or in Ironbridge, after very limited rainfall overnight.

The River Severn in Shropshire remains on flood alert. In Bridgnorth, a peak water level of between 3.3m and 3.6m is expected to occur overnight.

Meanwhile, council officers are set to inspect trees at Newport’s Burton Borough School after strong winds sent a 30ft Silver Birch crashing onto the roof of a car in the staff car park yesterday.
