Pictures from the past – 06 January

Enjoy this picture – because David Mitchell, of Bayston Hill, had to endure a severe ticking off for taking it. “Shrewsbury’s Music Hall was, in the 1950s, a popular venue for Friday and Saturday night dances which often attracted some of the top bands of the day, such as Sid Phillips and his Band, seen here in 1954,” he says. “Sid Phillips, on the right, was a fine clarinettist in the Dixieland style. His glamorous vocalist at the time was Betty Miller, while the young trumpet player on the left was soon to leave and form a band of his own. His name was Kenny Ball. “Incidentally, I received a severe reprimand that night from the manager, Ivor Hookway, for taking photographs on council property without permission. I fear my response that, out of courtesy, I had sought and received permission from Mr Phillips, cut no ice at all.”
