Pair arrested after string of Shropshire cafe mobile phone thefts

Two people have been arrested after customers at a number of cafes and restaurants in Shropshire had their mobile phones stolen while enjoying their meals and refreshments.

A 25-year-old man and a 15-year-old youth were arrested on suspicion of stealing mobiles following two incidents in Shrewsbury and two in Oswestry on December 28 and 29.

The man has been charged with four counts of theft and will appear at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court on January 16. The teenager has received a final warning.

They were arrested and taken in for questioning on December 30 after their vehicle was stopped by police in the Bromsgrove area of the West Midlands.

In all cases, customers were distracted by two men asking for money and waving newspapers in their faces.

Following the four thefts, West Mercia Police issued a warning urging people visiting cafes, fast-food outlets and restaurants, not to leave their phones lying on tables and to keep them securely out of sight.

The series of thefts occurred after the phone owners were deliberately distracted by the offenders, and police confirmed the same tactics were used in each incident.
