Shrewsbury residents’ concern at mobile mast plan

Concerns have been raised about plans to put a 41ft high mobile phone mast close to a secondary school in Shrewsbury.

Telefonica is hoping to install the mast on land at Stanley Lane, close to Meole Brace School, and has applied for planning permission to Shropshire Council. The applicants say that the mast would be used to support Vodafone’s mobile network coverage in the local area.

Concerns have been made by Shrewsbury Town Council in relation to its proximity to the school, but the authority said it would not be officially opposing the plans.

A letter from town clerk Helen Ball said: “Members are concerned about the location of this column being situated so close to the school and the potential health risk it poses to the 1,200 pupils.”

A spokesman for the applicants said they were taking public concerns about the perceived health effects of such masts seriously.

“We recognise that the growth in mobile technology had led in some cases to some public concern about perceived health effects of mobile technology and its deployment, in particular about siting masts close to local communities,” he said.

“We take these public concerns seriously and are committed to providing the latest independent peer-reviewed research findings, information, advice and guidance from national and international agencies on radio frequency electromagnetic fields.”

Telefonica is also hoping to put up another 41ft mast on Monkmoor Playing Field, as part of the company’s efforts to improve phone reception in Shrewsbury.

That proposal was given a cautious welcome by Mayor Councillor Tony Durnell, who represents Monkmoor.

He said the location was preferable to other parts of the area Telefonica had looked at for building a mast, such as Belvidere Road, saying the playing fields was a less built-up area.
