Flood warning as more rain forecast to hit region

Wednesday 4th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.

Shropshire and Mid Wales were today on flood alert with more rain expected over the next 24 hours – as residents started to count the cost of fierce winds which lashed the region.

Flood barriers were set up in Frankwell in Shrewsbury this morning and Frankwell car park is expected to be closed for the whole day with water levels on the River Severn rising.

An Environment Agency flood warning has been issued on the River Vyrnwy at Melverley while flood alerts are in place on the River Severn throughout Shropshire, the Severn/Vyrnwy confluence near Shrewsbury, and on the Teme, Onny and Corve rivers near Ludlow.

In Mid Wales yesterday, a woman had to be rescued from her 4×4 vehicle after it became stuck in flood water outside Welshpool Airport.

Firefighters used waders to get to the vehicle and help the woman to dry land.

It comes after winds reaching more than 50mph battered Shropshire yesterday, leaving acres of farmland under water.

A large tree fell on to a house in Yeldside Gardens in Cleobury Mortimer at about 3.30pm, destroying part of the roof and the side of the building.

The house was empty at the time.
