Shrewsbury explosion victim still waiting for payout
Tuesday 3rd January 2012, 5:00PM GMT.
One of the victims of the Shrewsbury explosion has revealed she is still awaiting a compensation payout for the injuries she sustained – two years on.
Today marks two years since a peaceful new year was shattered by the blast at a property on the junction of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road in Shrewsbury.
It happened at 11.25am on Sunday, January 3, 2010.
In April last year National Grid and BT confirmed they had agreed to pay compensation to the 11 victims, including five who were seriously hurt.
But Sarah Pearse, who suffered 67 per cent burns when she, Scott Godbold and Sam Devine-Turner were thrown from an upstairs flat in the blast, today revealed they were still working through details over the compensation.
The 21-year-old said: “We’re still sorting out the details and there’s a lot to consider such as loss of earnings, so there has been no compensation yet but the offer is still there.”
Sarah said she was still having hospital check-ups.
She added: “I’m at university now, living away from Shrewsbury, so I have definitely moved on.”
The blast damaged the Theatre Severn among other buildings. Businesses affected by the explosion said they had also moved on, with Oliver Parry, owner of the Salopian Bar, saying the real victims were those injured in the blast.
