Organ donation charity benefits from Ben’s party
Tuesday 3rd January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Hundreds attended an extravaganza in Shrewsbury and raised almost £3,000 for charity in an event organised by a terminally ill 28-year-old man.
Ben Hughes, of Harlescott, has chronic lung failure, and doctors have given him only a few months to live.
So, with help from friends and family, he has launched his own ‘bucket list’ to achieve his dream ambitions in the time he has left.
With his wife Ayla, 24, he organised a charity fundraiser at the Brooklands Hotel in Meole Brace, with a charity auction, live music and fireworks.
Ben said the New Year’s Eve event had been a great success, with about 250 turning up for the evening and raising about £2,960 , to be split between organ donor charity Donna’s Dream and towards Ben’s list.
Dozens of companies donated prizes for the charity auction which included signed Watford, Fulham and Shrewsbury Town football shirts as well as two VIP tickets to see the band Embrace and meet them backstage. Ben said: “We are looking to have raised about £2,962. It just went crazy and we are very happy with the outcome.
“The big sellers were the Celebrity Juice tickets, which went for £460. The Embrace tickets sold for £150.”
He said his wife had played a major role in ensuring the success of the event. “Ayla did really well with it,” he said.
