Hope of Shrewsbury jobs boost as plan is unveiled
Monday 2nd January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
A businessman today claimed up to 30 jobs could be created under plans to breathe new life into a historic building in Shrewsbury.
Kad Zaman, the owner of the Station Hotel in Wellington, has applied for planning permission to transform the derelict Old Maltings building in Frankwell, near to the Theatre Severn and the Guildhall, into a thriving retail hub complete with offices, shops and restaurants.
Mr Zaman said the modern complex could include space for up to eight units and could create about 30 jobs.
A design and access statement lodged with the plans said: “Frankwell Quay Warehouse is currently a derelict property. The aim of the redevelopment is to re-invigorate the local economy meeting local demands and providing a hub of activity in close proximity to the theatre and waterside.
“The current property is tired and the timber doors are in ill-repair. The development of the current warehouse will encourage a greater aesthetic for the local area as the current property is run down due to vacant nature.”
Permission is being sought to change to use of the existing building to provide a mixed use of restaurants, retail and office accommodation, including the installation of a glazed facade following the removal of timber doors.
The plans also include space for outdoor eating and seated areas along the street. The design and access statement said: “The improvements will provide a new business area for the local community providing restaurants, shops and offices.”
Developers also claim that the redevelopment would benefit Shropshire Council staff working in the Guildhall building in Frankwell, who would be able to use the facilities during their working day.
The plans take into account the historic nature of the Old Maltings and its status within the Frankwell conservation area.
It said: “Frankwell Quay Warehouse is within a conservation area, therefore the windows will retain the same style and size, to not detract from the historic quality and design of the property.”
Mr Zaman has displayed some ideas for what type of businesses could go inside the possible Maltings development online with more details available at www.frankwellquay.co.uk

More traffic, more barfly louts and the default lure of part time minimum wage jobs will no doubt close the deal with the over development fans at Shropshire planning. Fill the empty units we have in the town before throwing up new ones.
