Man dies after Shrewsbury car fire

The man, who has not been named, died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital yesterday following the fire in his car on Battlefield Heritage Park, off Battlefield Link Road, on Wednesday.

Emergency services battled to release the man from his vehicle and he was given treatment at the scene after he went into cardiac arrest.

He was rushed to the hospital with ‘significant’ burns to his body. Police said today that his condition deteriorated and he died yesterday afternoon.

A post mortem will be carried out later today and a full report is being prepared for coroner Mr John Ellery.

Richard Ewels, police spokesman, said: “The man who was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with severe burns on Wednesday died yesterday afternoon.

“It is hoped to hold a post mortem examination today and police inquiries into the incident are continuing before a full report is prepared for the coroner.”

Mr Ewels added: “We would like to repeat our appeal for witnesses who were in the car park at the time of the fire to contact Shrewsbury Police Station on the non-emergency 101 number.”

The fire broke out in the car park close to the roundabout accessing the heritage park.

Police are still working to establish the cause of the blaze.

Police, ambulance crews, including a rapid response vehicle and a paramedic officer, and firefighters all attended the scene and freed the man shortly after 3.40pm.

Ambulance crews started emergency resuscitation on the man as soon as he was released from the vehicle and managed to re-start his heart at the scene.

Burns dressings were applied to his wounds and he was transferred by an ambulance on blue lights to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where doctors had been alerted to his arrival.
