Cars raided by sat nav thieves in Telford

Thieves the hunt for valuable sat navs went on a car smashing spree in Telford today.

Windows were smashed on 11 cars, with sat navs stolen from two of them. Police today said they were ‘fairly certain’ the break-ins were linked and that the culprits could be local. They warned motorists to take measures to protect their vehicles in case the raiders struck again.

The break-ins, which all happened in the early hours, are the latest in a spate in the Dawley Bank area.

Steve Loveridge, crime risk advisor for Telford police, said cars were targeted in Peveril Bank, Edward Parry Court and Old Office Close.

He said: “We had 11 reports and I would say it is fairly certain we are looking at the same offenders being responsible for all of them, judging by the short timescale between each one.

“Two vehicles had sat navs stolen, the other nine suffered smashed windows where the thieves then looked for items to steal but were ultimately unsuccessful.”

Mr Loveridge said there would have been noise from the smashing of the glass and he appealed for anyone who heard or saw anything to get in touch.

He added: “We would urge people to garage vehicles if possible, if not park close to home or in a well-lit area. Make sure the car is locked and do not leave any valuables in the car, even in the glove box.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Telford police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
