Lifeline hope as Bridgnorth church is threatened with closure

A church near Bridgnorth earmarked for closure could be handed a last minute lifeline, officials said this afternoon. St Bartholomew in Glazeley is under threat.

Leaders decided to shut the church after discovering £15,000 was needed to repair its roof.

They said that, coupled with a big drop in attendances at services made it unviable to keep open.

But volunteer secretary Marion Corfield said the vicar, Rev Clive Williams had managed to keep the church open following strong public support.

She said it was now vital villagers attended a public meeting in the new year to ensure it stayed open for future generations.

Mr Williams said sufficient people had become involved as active members of the Parochial Church Council for him to seek a stay of execution through the Bishop of Hereford.

But Mrs Corfield said: “If we do not keep people interested and get them involved there’s a real possibility we could slide back again.

“We are going to desperately push to fundraise for the roof.”

Mrs Corfield said she only became aware of the possible church closure in August after reading about in a parish magazine.

The public meeting will be held on January 4 at the Down Inn, Bridgnorth, at 8pm. For more details contact Mrs Corfield on marion.corfield@talktalk.net or 07814 687349.
