Yobs wreck waitress’s car in theft attempt
Tuesday 27th December 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
A teenager has been left devastated after yobs left her car unfit to drive as they tried to steal it from her home in Telford.
Waitress Sophie Howard, who relies on the Vauxhall Corsa to get her to work at concerts and big football games around the country, had left the car outside her home in Woodside.
But the festive period has been ruined for the 18-year-old by the thieves who were caught on CCTV breaking into her car in the early hours of Christmas Eve.
The footage shows that, unable to get the car started, one of the three attempts to push the car away from its resting place behind the family home – only to push it straight into another parked car belonging to her dad, Paul Howard.
Undeterred, he is then joined by the two other yobs – one who puts down a beer can before getting involved – and the three of them push the car away.
It was eventually found a couple of streets away but had been left in such a state it was undriveable.
Paul said: “I woke up at around 6.30am and noticed from the cameras that the car had gone.
“I watched the footage back and obviously saw what had happened, the time on the CCTV is an hour out so it must have happened at around 5.50am.
“We went straight out looking for it and found it abandoned a couple of streets away.”
He added: “They had obviously given up after not being able to start it, but they did take the sat nav she had left in there and left it in such a state it was wrecked.
“I hope people recognise who they are from the CCTV and I am prepared to offer a cash reward of £300 for information leading to their conviction. It’s the principle of the matter.”
Sophie said she had been left devastated by the theft.
She said: “I only passed my test last year and I worked hard to get that car.
“I rely on it. I work for a recruitment agency as a waitress and I get sent all over the country to cover concerts, football matches and other big events.
“Now I am either going to have to try to get a lift or use my dad’s car.
“It’s just mindless. Why can’t they just go out and get a job and buy one themselves?”
Police have been handed the CCTV footage and are investigating the incident.
