A male voice choir which calls itself the oldest ‘boyband’ in the world will be travelling to Leeds to take part in a national television show with TV presenters Ant and Dec.

The 60-strong Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir has been invited to pre-record a show which will be aired on ITV on Christmas Eve. The group, which has members from Oswestry, is due to start filming its part today with English tenor Russell Watson.

Dave Jones, the choir’s chairman, said: “We have had an amazing year and we have got good concerts left to do.

“We are in Leeds for the Ant and Dec Text Santa programme which will be on TV on Christmas Eve.”

The show has been created to raise awareness and cash for vulnerable people over the Christmas season.

Funds raised by Text Santa will be divided between six charities including Carers UK, Crisis UK, Samaritans and Help the Hospices.

The shows are on ITV 1 are presented by Ant and Dec, Phillip Schofield, Holly Willoughby and Christine Bleakley.

The choir will also be featured on S4C at midnight signing a Welsh Carol which was recorded when the choir travelled to New York this year.

The choir, which draws its members from Oswestry, Chirk and the Welsh border area around Froncysyllte, released their own version of the 1971 Clive Dunn hit Grandad as a single this Monday and are hopeful it will do well in the charts.

If it makes it to number one, Grandad would become only the second song to make it recorded by two entirely unrelated artists.

The first was Mary’s Boy Child recorded in 1957 by Harry Belafonte and by Bonney M in 1978.

Mr Jones said he was thankful for the support they have received. He said: “We wish everybody a really merry Christmas and thank them for their support.

The programme will be screened from 7.30pm until 10pm.
