Shrewsbury Round Table struggling to give cash away

They’ve spent weeks raising cash for good causes – but now a charitable organisation in Shropshire is struggling to give away the thousands of pounds it has raised.

Shrewsbury Round Table raised almost £3,000 during the festive period thanks to its annual Santa’s sleigh runs around the town.

But chairman of the club Gareth Morgan said that nobody had yet to come forward to ask for a share of the cash. He said the Round Table was keen to hear from local charities and organisations that would benefit from some money.

“The Round Table used to be quite a large organisation that everyone knew about, but over the last few years it has become less well known,” he said.

“We want to push ourselves forward and let people know we are out there.

“We have raised £2,800 which is up for grabs and we are keen to give away this money away to local groups.”

In the past the club has donated money to Shrewsbury Rugby Club, Midlands Air Ambulance and the A&E department at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Mr Morgan said the only condition for receiving the money was that it went to a local group, such as a charity or scout group.

This year’s set of sleigh runs took place between December 10 and 18, visiting local supermarkets, garden centres and pubs in an attempt to raise the cash.

Volunteers joined Father Christmas at Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda and Dobbies Garden Centre to make collections during the fundraising period, as well as visiting The Square and the Beacon, Steam Wagon and Charles Darwin pubs.

In an effort to cover as much of the town as possible, they also paid visits to Copthorne, Cherry Orchard, Mount Pleasant and Sutton.

Shrewsbury Round Table is a club for men aged between 18 to 45 and holds meetings twice a month. As well as raising lots of money for charity the group go on social events such as archery, canoeing and quad-biking.

Mr Morgan said the club was always on the lookout for new members. If you are interested contact secretary Mark Halsey on (01952) 248909 or 07920 8212064.
