16,000 Shropshire homes to get superfast broadband
Thursday 22nd December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
More than 16,000 further homes and businesses in Shropshire will have access to faster broadband by next summer, BT said this afternoon.
Bayston Hill in Shrewsbury, Hollinswood in Telford, Baschurch, and Market Drayton are to be included in the latest roll-out plans for the next generation broadband service delivered over copper lines by the telecommunications giant.
It will make available broadband speeds of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps) – more than double the maximum speeds previously available to the majority of UK homes and businesses.
The technology is already available in Bridgnorth, Church Stretton, Cuckoo Oak, Dawley, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Stirchley and Telford, and is expected to reach 87 per cent of West Midlands’ premises by the summer of next year.
John Dovey, BT’s West Midlands regional director, said: “BT’s roll-out of faster broadband across Shropshire is running at a very rapid pace.”
Richard Sheehan, managing director of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “We very much welcome this latest announcement from BT.Faster broadband is going to play an essential role in the future success of the county.
“In an increasingly competitive and technological world it is essential that local businesses and households have access to high-speed communications.”

Its a shame Mr Dovey is unable to offer any help to people in Shropshire that are still unable to get ANY broadband connection through BT. Some of us would be happy with a slow connection!

Up to 20Mb/s? That would be ADSL2+ then, not FTTC/VDSL.
Guess what… if you currently get around 3Mb/s or less on ADSL Max, you’re only going to get around 3Mb/s or less on ADSL2+. So for those already struggling to get decent speeds due to line length, there will be no improvement.

Role on March for the Shrewsbury exchange being fibre enabled!
According to the talktalk fibre speed checker I will be able to get 23.6mb download and 2mb upload on fibre. Compared to my current crappy 2.8mbps download and 0.3mbps upload via ADSL2+

Not good enough!!! They are just fiddling with a few places that already have a broadband service when a large part of the county has none or, at best, a third-world service well below 2 Mb/s. Typical British fudge!!!

Well, in the spirit of the panto season, as far as Ludlow is concerned, “Oh no it isn’t”. 4.3 or 4.2 is the best speed presently available around here.

You’re right, we are lucky if we have a connection at all some days (Ludlow exchange) and we never get anywhere near 5mb never mind 20.

Superfast broadband? My broadband connection from Virgin Media is over twice what BT are offering and I have had this for over 2 years now! Before that I was on 20 mp/s for a number of years.
However, please take note of the term “Up-to” 20 m/ps. That means it can quite legally run at 1 m/ps without breaking any rules.
