Controversial plans to build an eco-home on a site near Shrewsbury have been given the go-ahead – ending a five-year planning battle.

Janta and Merav Wheelhouse have lived with their two sons in a caravan at Karuna, their 18-acre site at Picklescott, since moving from Bayston Hill in 2005.

They have fought a High Court battle with Shropshire Council to stay there.

But now the couple have won planning permission from the council for a single-storey part-straw house on the site. The three-bedroom circular house will be constructed on straw bales and the roof made of turf.

Permission was granted after residents showed their support for the plans.

Resident Christine Lawrie said: “This home will be built from locally-sourced materials to plans that have been carefully drawn up in consultation with planning officers.

Using local materials means it will contribute to the local economy. It is designed for zero carbon emissions as well as low visual impact.

The couple were today unavailable for comment.

Brilliant news will be a lot better than many of these awful stand alone properties popping up in in fields in the countryside thee days ,built under the guise of farm workers cottages , who has to be on site to watch the odd chicken.

most i think must have been designed by a person in the dark.

They are a lovely family, they deserve this good news. When my daughter was at primary school, the class visted Karuna – they had a wonderful time. They emailed me some beautiful photos they had ben taken of the day, one in particular of my daughter on a swing which I treasure.
