Extra market day to boost Oswestry traders

Oswestry’s market traders are opening up for an extra day tomorrow to encourage Christmas shoppers to support local businesses.

The indoor market will be open on Thursday, Friday and Christmas Eve, giving the stallholders a boost for the end of the year.

Shoppers can also ensure their festive food is local when many of the farmers’ market regulars join other stallholders on Friday for the outdoor event.

Saturday’s outdoor market will also go ahead on Christmas Eve.

Markets manager David Clough said he hoped people would take advantage of being able to get their fresh, local produce and last minute Christmas presents and decorations from market stallholders.

He said the past 12 months had been one where the indoor and outdoor markets had held their own and even increased in size.

“The Powis Hall market has been full throughout the year and improvements to the building are continuing,” he said.

“The number of stallholders attending the once a month farmers’ market is continuing to rise and we have also had a number of special markets such as the charity and craft markets.

“Oswestry is known as a border market town and we are determined to continue that tradition.”

He said the town council would continue to work with traders to help woo more shoppers to the markets.

“This year saw the number of stallholders at the outdoor market remain steady which, in this economic climate is a real success,” he said. “We will be working hard to encourage more stallholders to Oswestry next year.”
