Stephen Hunt has urged Wolves to start showing consistency by kicking off an unbeaten run to buck the trend of “must-win” games.
Wolves host Norwich tonight on the back of successive defeats which have made it 10 losses in the last 13 games for Mick McCarthy’s side.
Defeat against Stoke on Saturday means that this evening’s visit of the ninth-placed Canaries is the latest crunch game for Wolves, who seem to respond well to the so-called ‘tipping points’ after taking seven points out of nine against Swansea, Wigan and Sunderland previously at Molineux.
“It seems crazy having these must-win and six-pointers every third or fourth game,” said Hunt.
“It’s because we haven’t been able to build on the wins we’ve had and get a little run together.
“That’s the most frustrating thing – we’ve not been able to get a good result on the back of a good result.
“Hopefully we can do what we’ve managed to do lately and that’s bounce back again against Norwich tonight.
“We’re still confident we can climb the table. We’re not even halfway through the season yet but we know we need to find some consistency fairly quickly. We need to put a string of results together.”
Hunt believes Wolves have the players to cope with the high-pressure games after the experience of the last two years when they have won from positions of adversity.
“I think we’ve shown a good mentality in these games because we have to go forward and I think it will lead to a very good game,” he said.
Wolves face Norwich aiming to put their frustrations to one side after two controversial decisions potentially cost them dearly against Stoke at the weekend.
Hunt’s 17th-minute penalty that put them ahead ensured they benefitted from the spot-kick conceded by Jonathan Woodgate on Matt Jarvis.
But, like his team-mates, Hunt was frustrated that justice wasn’t seen to be done by sending off the former Tottenham defender for a second bookable offence.
And that frustration was compounded later with the award of a free kick for Roger Johnson’s challenge on Jonathan Walters and Kevin Doyle’s subsequent own goal.
“I think generally we played well and were doing well,” said Hunt. “But Jonathan Woodgate was fortunate not to get sent off.”
Wolves players didn’t crowd around the referee trying to get Woodgate dismissed however.
And Hunt believes that honesty will eventually serve them well.
“I think other teams might have been more ruthless in that situation,” he said.
“We hope all the decisions level themselves out over the season because there have been a few. But if we do behave in a good way on the pitch, hopefully referees will see we’re honest.
“It was probably the wrong decision not to send him off and I don’t think it was a foul for the free-kick which led to their equaliser either. But we have to move on.”
Hunt is at least relieved to have the chance to put things right quickly tonight.
“It’s always good after losing to have the chance to put things right straightaway,” he said. “Norwich have started the season very well. They’ve got some good players. They play good football and have two physical players up front who can score.
“They’re also coming to us on the back of a decent result at Everton so it’s going to be difficult.
“But it’s a game where we need to be taking points.”
