Name change marks Shrewsbury youth centre’s link to Flax Mill

A new youth centre in Shrewsbury which features a number of facilities has been officially renamed following suggestions from youngsters using it.

The old Salop Glass building in Ditherington Road has been transformed into a youth centre with indoor skate and scooter ramps and the chance to play basketball and pool. It has been open about a month.

It has now been named Flaxivity to mark to its links to the Flax Mill development.

The building, which had been vacant for several years, is due to be demolished once the planned multi-million redevelopment of the Flax Mill takes place.

But while council officials wait for the confirmation of funding, the site has been transformed into an activity centre.

Councillor Alan Mosley, who came up with the idea, said he was delighted to see the building being well-used by local youngsters.

The centre is home to a weekly fencing club, while Tuesday evening sessions are also being run for skateboard, scooter and BMX enthusiasts.

Councillor Mosley said: “This is a great facility, not only for local young people but also those from further afield, and thanks go to all the stakeholders involved.

“It is excellent to see the project being used successfully and it is a major asset for the area. The Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings will soon take over the lease of the building which will be renamed Flaxivity, following suggestions by the young people.

“It’s already a tremendous success with over 60 young people having come along on Tuesdays with ages ranging from 10 to 20.”
