Whitchurch centre’s new CCTV system after thefts

Improved surveillance equipment will be installed at Whitchurch Heritage Centre in a bid to curb crime and anti-social behaviour.

Whitchurch Town Council has approved plans to upgrade the CCTV system at the centre which has been the victim of several thefts, including lead from the roof. Last year the centre was broken into, had a charity donation box stolen and £500 of damage caused to the building.

The offender is believed to have broken the door of the centre and reached in to grab the collection box.

Improvements to the surveillance will include staff being able to see who enters and leaves the centre.

Mayor of Whitchurch, Councillor Peggy Mullock, said the new CCTV system would cost about £1,000.

She said: “The current system is past its sell-by date so we have approved plans to install new CCTV at the heritage centre.

“There have been one or two problems in the past with a charity box being stolen and lead being taken from the roof.”

Councillor Doris added: “It’s been an ongoing thing for some time, but it’s going ahead now.

“The centre is getting an upgraded system. Staff are going to have a screen so they can see who is walking around the centre and who is coming in and out.

“They have had a couple of incidents involving a charity box being stolen and the building been broken into. But they haven’t had a lot of big incidents.

“Because they might have a couple of valuable items in there we wanted to err on the side of caution.”

The heritage centre opened in 1998 and included tourist information.

Last year a customer service point was given space within the building to provide information on Shropshire Council services.

The centre offers a wealth of information on the town’s history as well as giving advice on what to visit in the area and further afield.
