Drivers are being warned to watch out for black ice as forecasters predict freezing temperatures and treacherous conditions on county roads.

There will be no let-up in Britain’s cold snap as sub-zero temperatures continue this weekend.

The Met Office has issued warnings of ice which are due to stay in place until 10am on Monday.

It comes after a child suffered minor injuries when a snow flurry caused a crash between two cars and a bus on a busy Shropshire road.

Farmers used tractors to help move the three vehicles from the road after the accident on the A488 at Rockhill, just outside Clun, at around 4.15pm yesterday.

And a motorist had a lucky escape after the articulated lorry he was driving overturned on the A5 near Shrewsbury.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to Woodcote Roundabout near Shrewsbury just after 1pm yesterday.

The driver was out by the time they arrived and was uninjured – but traffic was held up for several hours while a crane was brought in to remove the lorry, which had been carrying a load of cardboard, from the road.

In Clun, the road was closed for nearly four hours as emergency services initially struggled to get there because of the snow and treacherous conditions. It was gritted before being reopened again just before 7pm last night.

Inspector Jayne Fitzpatrick, of West Mercia Police, said: “The snowy conditions made it difficult for us to get there and the road was shut off.” She added: “One child suffered minor injuries and the road was reopened after being gritted.”
