Wem town square’s name to mark Queen’s Diamon Jubilee
Friday 16th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Wem’s new town square will be named in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Town councillors have suggested the name Jubilee Place or Diamond Jubilee Place for the controversial development.
They also want to erect a plaque in the square, which will be created on land between the Co-op and White Lion pub.
Work on the £100,000 project will start in mid-January and take about six weeks to complete.
Plans have divided public opinion with some claiming it will breathe new life into the town, while others say it is a waste of money.
Supporters of the project also believe it will give the town a new venue for outdoor events such as car boot sales and farmers’ markets.
Speaking at last night’s town council meeting, Councillor Pauline Dee backed the idea to give it a name to mark the diamond jubilee.
She said: “I think it’s a wonderful idea.”
Members agreed to write to Shropshire Council about their proposals. It is thought the unitary authority has no plans to name the square.
