Snow on way as big freeze grips Shropshire
Thursday 15th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Up to three inches of snow was expected to fall over high ground in Shropshire and Mid Wales tonight as the first big freeze of winter arrives.
Forecasters said snow would start to fall at about 3am.
Winds of up to 60mph are due to hit the south coast tonight with snow set to move in over Wales, the Midlands and possibly south east England.
Forecasters today said the snow would continue until about 9am while temperatures would drop to 1C (33F).
Paul Mott, forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: “I think locally we could see up to 8cms of snow over some of the hills of Shropshire, across Mid Wales and the far west of the Midlands.”
Met Office chief forecaster Anthony Astbury said the unsettled weather over the next few days could bring a range of hazards across the country, from snow and ice to heavy rain and strong winds. By mid afternoon tomorrow there are expected to be sunny intervals with a high of 3C (37F).
The Met Office said colder-than-average temperatures were set to continue through the weekend. It has issued warnings of icy weather for Saturday and Sunday, and conditions are only predicted to improve on Monday.
Last Monday high winds and heavy rain hit England and Wales, with one man having a lucky escape when a tree smashed into his bedroom while he was asleep in Winchester, Hampshire.

Well we have spring , where things bloom, summers where we have sun and light nights, autumn where we have brown leaves and wind and rain , and we have winter where yes we may have snow and it will be cold .
I to be honest believe most people are aware we have seasons and this time of the year we will get snow WOW all 3″ inches of it good god the country will come to a stand still as everyone is told “do not go out” .
I was in Boston USA when they had a ft and everything still went on as normal.

A “Big Freeze” as temperatures will reach as low as 1C?! Last time I checked I’m sure freezing point was at 0 degrees C. Less of the misleading and sensational headlines please!

We rang our friends in Bavaria last winter to ask how much snow had fallen there and how it was affecting them “Only had a metre , slight inconvenience, nothing more”,was their reply. They could not comprehend that 1/2″(12.5 mm}had brought us to a standstill !!!

Which “they” are you having a go at bob?
If it had snowed heavily and they hadn’t given a warning, you’d be moaning.
If the council “they” hadn’t gritted and it had snowed, you’d be moaning.
The council have announced that they have twice the reserves of salt grit they had last year – so I expect you’ll moan if we have a mild winter and it doesn’t get used….

Do you work for the council Rob?
As a weather man?
And I suppose you never moan?
Well actually you moan at people about moaning
And we like to moan anyway – We are British
Thats why we read newspapers and leave comments in square boxes on websites
