Shropshire mechanic joins South Pole anniversary celebration
Thursday 15th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
A 25-year-old mechanic from Pontesbury has joined dozens of scientists and explorers as well as the Norwegian prime minister at a special celebration at the South Pole.
Finn Walton joined the dignitaries seen above at the celebration yesterday to mark the 100th anniversary since Norwegian Roald Amundsen led the first expedition to the south pole.
The mechanic, who served his apprenticeship at the Plough Garage in Pontesbury, drove the special party – which includes the Norwegian Prime
Minister Jens Stoltenberg – 700 miles to the pole in a specially adapted off-road Ford vehicle, which was featured on Top Gear a few years ago. He had to dodge deep crevasses and, at one stage, he had to fix the vehicle with his bare hands in temperatures of -25C after it broke down.
