Thursday 15th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Council chiefs have delivered a grim pre-Christmas message to Shropshire residents, warning them to brace themselves for a further public sector spending squeeze.
Shropshire Council chief executive Kim Ryley gave the gloomy forecast to members of the authority’s cabinet yesterday. Speaking about the funding issues facing the council, Mr Ryley predicted further challenges.
He said: “We have the most uncertain period of local government finance I can remember for some time.
“There will be further cuts in public sector spending.
“Our strategy which was to be not reactive to this at all but to take the longer view, planning for uncertainty and unpredictability, has been the correct approach.”
In an illustration of the problems the council is facing, the meeting heard despite the best efforts of officers, the council’s revenue account still had a projected overspend of just over £2 million.
