Shrewsbury Square Carols extravaganza is a hit
Thursday 15th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
A singer’s charity performance of a classic Christmas carol could become an internet hit after she delighted thousands of people with her rendition of it at Shrewsbury’s annual Carols in the Square event.
O Holy Night was recorded by soloist Charlotte Edwards to raise money for Hope House Children’s Hospice, and she took to the stage in The Square last night to perform it.
Shropshire Council has launched the Christmas song to raise cash for the charity and is now calling on people to download it from iTunes and Amazon to make it a Christmas hit.
The carol was just one of the many songs performed at last night’s carol concert in The Square which was attended by 4,000 people
Karen Davies, of Ellesmere Road, Shrewsbury, attended with her partner Karl Chadwick and said the only disappointment had been the lack of snow in the air.
And town centre resident Gabby Foster said: “It’s a lovely atmosphere and really brings together people of all ages. The best bit is the mulled wine. We didn’t know all of the words to the hymns but we joined in.”
The programme of festive favourites saw crowds singing Silent Night, Away in a Manger, The First Noel and Once in Royal David’s City, before the climactic Jingle Bells which closed the night.
BBC Radio Shropshire presenters Eric Smith and Clare Ashford led the event, which was broadcast live.
It was organised by Shropshire Council with help from staff from Theatre Severn, St John Ambulance and waste contractor Veolia.
