A new managing director has been appointed at Telford & Wrekin Council – the first post of its kind at the authority.

Interim chief executive Richard Partington has been given the £137,000 post and will take over the position held by former chief executive Victor Brownlees who left in August.

Mr Partington will be paid £13,000 less than Mr Brownlees and will be in charge of ensuring the authority makes £40 million of cuts over the next three years.

Councillor Kuldip Sahota, Telford & Wrekin Council leader, said: “Richard was the unanimous choice and I am delighted that we have such high quality and very able candidate from within the council.

“Since he was appointed interim chief executive, Richard has delivered proposals for a new management structure, moving the co-operative council proposals further forward and helping us towards the £40 million savings we must find due to government cuts over the next three years.

“The managing director role will be key to helping to continue to our progress to becoming a co-operative council and I am sure that councillors from all sides will welcome Richard to his new role.”

Mr Partington started his career in local government as an administrative assistant at North Shropshire District Council. He joined Telford & Wrekin Council in 1991 and previous roles include best value manager and head of policy, performance and partnerships.
