Shropshire jobless number rises by 11 per cent
Wednesday 14th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
The number of people out of work across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin has risen by more than 11 per cent over the past year, figures published today have revealed.
The news came on another gloomy day for the Government, as dole queues continued to rise across Britain, reaching a 17-year high.
In November last year, there were 8,326 people out of work across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. Last month, that figure had risen nearly to 9,281 – slightly down from October’s figure of 9,318.
Nationally, unemployment increased by 128,000 between August and October to 2.64 million, while the number of people claiming jobseeker’s allowance last month increased by 3,000 to 1.6 million.
Average earnings increased two per cent in the year to the end of October, the Office for National Statistics said.
Employment Minister Chris Grayling said: “There has obviously been an un-welcome increase in unemployment since the summer but these latest figures show some signs that the labour market is stabilising.
“The number of people in employment is higher than last month’s published figure and the number of un-employed people is stead- ying.
Encouragingly this is also the case for young people not in education.”
But Paul Kenny, general secretary of the GMB union, said: “A double-dip Osborne recession, rising unemployment, rapidly falling living standards are the Tory/Lib Dem miserable Christmas gifts to the nation.”
