Letter: Find out what taxpayers’ priorities are

There has been some comment about the proposal to switch off some of the street lights that we currently pay for.

Isn’t it time that Shropshire Council undertook an exercise to find out what the taxpayers’ priorities are.

Care for the elderly, for example would come out a high priority whereas public art may not.

My suggestion is to do away with the expensive and unnecessary post of chief executive and save around £200,000 per year.

If £165,000 a year for street light savings is worth it, then so is this.

Can’t we just switch off half a dozen council non-jobs to fund this shortfall? Or is that too obvious for the unions and the bean-counters

Absolutely spot on. Why is it always that areas have to be found to “save money” when it is so obvious that the answer lies closer to the council’s heart – let them make savings forst, lead by example

Switch off all of the street lights in Shropshire! Or at least all non-essential lighting away from main pedestrian routes, and even these could be turned off for part of the night.

The council would save a fortune in electricity plus bulbs would last longer and could also claim it as part of their eco-drive.

I thought that the council did consult with us. Aren’t they called elections?
