Campaigners raise fears on pylon plan

Roads across Shropshire and Mid Wales could be inundated with lorries carrying huge loads, if proposals to build hundreds of wind turbines go ahead, a document by campaigners against the plans has claimed.
The 44-page document claimed that if the proposed construction of the windfarms in Mid Wales was given the go-ahead it would create chaos along the region’s roads because of the volume of traffic.
It claimed thousands of lorries would need to travel along roads in the region as the turbines are put up.
The document has been drawn up by the Montgomeryshire Against Pylons campaign group in an attempt to prevent hundreds of pylons being built across the region.
The group said a the document detailing the full impact of the green energy plans for Shropshire and Mid Wales would also be sent out to households. It has been accepted as evidence into a windfarm inquiry by Government officials in Wales.
Under the plans by National Grid, a sub-station could be built in Abermule, near Newtown, or Cefn Coch, near Llanfair Caereinion, with hundreds of pylons to link windfarms to the National Grid.
Bosses at National Grid stress no decision has been made about whether the link would use pylons or underground cables.
Jonathan Wilkinson, chairman of the Map group, said the document highlighted the impact the proposed wind farms and pylon routes could have on the whole area.
He said: “The maps will bring to life the impact of thousands of massive lorries thundering through our towns and villages and clogging up our roads for years to come.
“It will show the intrusion of wind power stations and pylons on our flora and fauna, wildlife habitats, sites of special scientific interest, historical monuments, and local landmarks. The document analyses the cumulative effect of the 800 turbines on the area’s road traffic, tourism, and wildlife, the probability of increased flooding and the effect on the landscape.”
David Ellis-Thomas, chairman of the Welsh Assembly’s environment and sustainability committee, said: “We can accept this document as witness evidence to our committee inquiry.”
