Inquest hears of builder’s 30ft fall
Tuesday 13th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
A 65-year-old builder fell from a 30ft ladder while renovating a house near Newport, an inquest has heard.
Trevor Newman was climbing a ladder attached to scaffolding while working at Bromstead Common when he fell.
Standing below was his twin brother Kelvin who told the inquest in Stafford yesterday that he heard his brother cry out ‘oh no’ before falling.
The inquest heard the builder, from Penkridge, had had a stroke four years previously.
A post mortem found he had another around the time of the fall, although the doctor was unable to say if it had happened before he fell or was a result of the fall.
The inquest jury ruled a verdict of accidental death.
His brother, from Solihull, told the inquest: “There was nothing I could have done.”
His brother died in hospital six days later.
Guy Dale, from said Health and Safety Executive, said while the ladder was properly secured and the scaffolding was solid, there should have been a pulley system in place to haul items up to the roof.
